Shopify Checkout ID in Shipping Sign-Up Messages
What is this?
When a customer signs up for shipping updates via WhatsApp on your Shopify thank-you page, the widget includes a number in the pre-filled sign-up message. This number is a Shopify checkout ID, not the final order number, and you can choose whether to include it.
Why it's a checkout ID, not an order number
Shopify only creates the final order number once checkout is fully complete. At the moment the widget triggers, Shopify hasn't generated the order yet, so only the checkout ID is available.
Good to know: Support can still use the checkout ID to look up the matching order in the Shopify admin search, the same way you'd search by order number. The tradeoff: some customers find the number confusing since it doesn't match the order number they later see in their confirmation email, and it can also interfere with AI agents that expect an order-number format.
⚙️ Turn off the Checkout ID (optional)
By default, the checkout ID is included for all shops. If you'd rather not show it to customers, turn it off per widget.
Open your widget settings.
Find "Include checkout ID in WhatsApp message" and switch it off. This is what appends the checkout ID to the prefilled message.
🚨 Important: If you turn this off, update your "Buzzword for flow" text too. By default it reads something like "...die Bestellnummer [checkout ID]". With the ID switched off, that part shows as empty, so:
Edit the Buzzword for flow field in the widget settings and save.
Edit the matching trigger word on the flow, so it still matches the new buzzword.
When to use this
You want a cleaner sign-up message without a number the customer doesn't recognize.
Your AI agent misreads the checkout ID as an order number and gives wrong answers.
When NOT to use this
Your support team relies on the checkout ID to quickly find orders via Shopify admin search before the order number exists elsewhere. In that case, keep it on and just be aware of the tradeoff above.
Good to know: Turning the checkout ID off only affects this widget. It doesn't change anything on Shopify's side.
You're all set and good to go!
